Have you heard of the new social networking site, BeReal? According to Hootsuite, BeReal was created in France in 2019 and since then has exploded in popularity on the social scene with more than 10 million daily active users.
So what exactly is BeReal?
According to its app page: “BeReal is the simplest photo sharing app to share once a day your real life in photos with friends. Every day at a different time, everyone captures a photo within 2 minutes. Capture and post in time to discover what your friends are up to.” As more and more social feeds show what seem to be “perfect” images and highly curated and edited content, BeReal is a new and unique way to discover what your friends are doing without any filters or editing. In fact, you can only retake the shot within that 2-minute timeframe.
Can Brands Use BeReal?
Having influencers and the like on the app goes against the mission of BeReal. At this time there is no pay-to-play advertising, but that doesn’t mean a brand can’t get on board. Chipotle was one of the first brands to find a unique way to capture its target audience’s attention by posting a snap of a reusable promo code where the first 100 people who used it got a free entrée.
According to Candice Beck, Chipotle’s director of social and influencer, “The response was incredible the first day…All of our codes were gone in about 30 minutes because it was new. And we’re still gaining followers. We just told people, and then every day after that, it was under a minute.”
So if your brand is looking to connect with Gen Z, BeReal may be just the way to do so. While planning ahead is hard and defeats the purpose of using the app, businesses can think of different ways to connect with this market. Perhaps it’s focusing on employees, behind-the-scenes sneak peeks, or freebies – whatever the case, companies should keep an eye on this fast-growing app!
